Infocom may have popularized interactive fiction on home computers in the early 80s, but it was R.A. Montgomery who popularized it on paper in the late 70s in the form of Choose Your Own Adventure novels. I’m sure anyone over, say, 25 remembers those page-flipping, multiple-choice books from their childhood and early teen years. I used to read (play?) them, and in my teens even upgraded to Fighting Fantasy gamebooks — the gateway drug that inevitably led to the evils of Dungeons & Dragons. (It was a different time, man.)
But while neither invented the genres, they both — Infocom and Montgomery — certainly made them prominent enough to influence…
