Back around a decade ago, popular RPG franchise Might and Magic saw the release of its seventh installment, For Blood and Honor. Two of its side quests revolved around a new mini-game New World Computing had devised called Arcomage. It was a card game not entirely unlike real-world fantasy card games like Magic: The Gathering, though not nearly as complex.
In Arcomage, each player had a structure that consisted of an inner tower and an outer wall. The basic object was to use your cards either to take down your opponent’s wall and tower while preventing him from doing the same to you, or build your own…

Mention “Splashworks” to any southern Ontario resident and they’ll immediately think of that portion of the Canada’s Wonderland amusement park dedicated to getting wet in the most entertaining and/or humiliating way possible.
However, Toronto-based Splashworks.com is perhaps looking to change that perception a bit and make people think of entertaining casual games instead. Branching out from the last decade making casual and advergames, their first iPhone project takes the traditional game of Blackjack and turns it into a casual solitaire game against the clock. The result is surprisingly entertaining.
You are given a Vegas hopper full of cards, four lanes, and three minutes. Cards are dealt to you…

Remember the game of Dominoes? No, no, not the thing where you stand a bunch of them on end in series and then knock them down. I mean the actual game dominoes were made for in the first place. Would you believe that I’ve done the former far, far more often than the latter? In fact, I think I’ve only played the actual game of dominoes once in my life, so when newcomers Mindlube sent me this last week, I had to pretty much learn the game all over again, because I barely remembered any of the rules.
Fortunately, the game has built-in help, and it’s…

It looks like HudsonSoft aren’t the only ones prone to giving away chunks of their game library, because it’s veteran development house PDAMill’s turn in the hot seat, and they’re looking to positively embarrass Hudson (and probably everyone else) with the number of games they’re giving away.
PDAMill are giving away no fewer than nine of their titles, which themselves offer up a whopping grand total of twenty-six games, all totally and completely free. Granted, while there are some real gems here, some of the games are derivative and mediocre at best — but it’s mediocrity PDAMill want to shower you with while asking nothing…

It’s yer basic checkers game, but with a nice dash of visual style. The playing pieces have a rather nice-looking glass look about them. It’s a bit pointless to go into the gameplay aspect of checkers because pretty well everyone should be familiar with that, so instead I’ll point out that the computer AI engine was developed by renowned Chess expert Martin Fierz, so it’ll give you a pretty good run for your money.
The sound in the game is singular: A whooshing sound whenever a piece is moved. It gets kind of old quickly, so I just play with the sound off. Also, I…

Another limited freebie — one I wanted to post about a week ago, but y’know … holidays and all that. It’s still free though, probably until the new year, and it’s still worth writing about, so I”m still going do this.
Lock ‘n’ Roll is a bit of a Poker Dice type of game, only … not quite. The idea here is to roll four dice and place them somewhere on a 4×4 grid, ultimately building point-scoring hands. Conceptually very simple, but in practice? Not so much. There’s more to this than just pips on a die. Each die can be one of four colours,…

MotionX Poker has long been one of the most popular games on the App Store, thanks to their physics system that simulates the rolling of dice with a high degree of realism. Now they’ve returned with an updated version of their original game entitled MotionX Poker Quest.
Poker Quest takes the original Poker Dice concept — bonuses and all — and give is a greater raison d’être. In this new ancient Egyptian-themed version of the game, your task is to travel the ancient lands and challenge the gods to games of poker dice. Each new land that you travel to has a buy-in amount that you’ll…

Anyone who has played the classic card game Snap, whether the kiddie variety with the fun pictures or with a standard deck of cards should appreciate this. Collect3 have just released Animal Snap! for the iPhone/Touch, and to celebrate, they are giving away both Animal Snap! and the original Snap! absolutely free for a limited time.
Snap is a simple two-player card game in which both players are dealt an entire deck of cards. Players then take turns simultaneously flipping over their top card and placing it on a discard pile. If the two cards match (whether…

App Name: THTouch
Developer: Pit Garbe
Category: Board, Dice & Card Games
Price: $0.99
You know, I love seeing games and apps from the jailbreak scene make the crossover to the App Store. Not that I didn’t like getting free stuff — and let’s face it, 99% of apps in the jailbreak scene were free or donationware, with only a small handful of notable exceptions. No, I still love free stuff — you’re currently standing in a shrine to it, for Og’s sake. (With the exception of notable premium apps that I like to post about, like this one.) I like seeing the crossovers happen because I love seeing devs from the jailbreak scene getting some financial love for their hard work, something that was pretty hard to…

App Name: Touch4: FS5 (Free)
Developer: FlipSide5
Category: Games: Board/Dice/Card
Another Connect 4 game hits the App Store (I’m sure you’re all familiar with this Milton Bradley classic), but FlipSide5 have gone to the trouble to try and make it as authentic as possible. The graphics are all wonderfully rendered in buttery plastic, and the familiar plastic “clink” of the chips dropping should bring back some memories. There’s even a slider at the bottom to empty the pieces when you start a game over — but if you’re feeling giddy, you can turn the device over and watch the chips fall out the top, too.
But FS5 have gone and added multiplayer capabilities over local WiFi or remote WiFi/3G/EDGE, so you can challenge real humans, see what…

App Name: Poker Solitaire Free
Developer: Sputnik Games
Category: Games: Board/Dice/Card
DS Effects tried this with a premium $1 app, and while it was better than their other “efforts” it was still pretty plain. Sputnik Games however have come around and done it much better — and free.
The object of Poker Solitaire is simple: You are given a deck of 25 randomly selected cards and a 5×5 grid on which to place them one-by-one. The object is to achieve the best poker hand you can both horizontally and vertically to get the highest score.
As is often the case with games that follow a simple and enjoyable strategy, Poker Solitaire is deviously addictive, the graphics are quite pleasant though not spectacular, and the sound is basic and…

App Name: Card Shark
Developer: Philip Stroffolino
Category: Games: Board/Dice/Card
There have been an unbelievable number of new releases on the App Store over the past week. More than there has been over the course of a single week, like, ever. I can’t tell yet if it’s just an explosion of new developers or just a lot of existing developers happening to release new stuff around the same time. Whatever the case, it’s far more than I can keep up with, so I’ll just have to post what I can post and leave it at that.
On to the game: Card Shark is another Solitaire game done up in 3D. It’s free, which of course is always good, and it features Klondike (1 and 3 card draw)…
