Here’s one sent to me by the developer’s via their PR firm, who were charged with handing out the codes. Coincidentally, the firm is named Talon PR, but the two are not related.
Yes, it’s collection-of-jokes app. Yes, you could swing a dead cat and hit thirty of them with enough momentum left over to clock Perez Hilton’s masculinity. Fact is, even newbie developers could cobble together a jokes app in a couple of days and shove it onto the App Store. In the rank-and-file of jokes apps however, iLaugh probably stands as an example of how they’re done right — to a degree, anyway.
To start with, iLaugh features an enormous database of over 50,000 tidbits of humour, from standard jokes to blonde jokes, Chuck Norris Facts to IRC quotes and everything in between. All of the jokes are neatly filed away under a wide range of categories that can each be toggled so you only get jokes on topics you’re interested in. There’s even an adult filter so you can avoid the dirty jokes if you want. What’s more, iLaugh has a bit of a social rating feature built in, where users can rank jokes up or down based on whether they like them or not, and you can further filter jokes based on ranking in case you only want the ones people voted highest. You can also bookmark your favourites.
The jokes are all stored on a remote server, which does make the app small in size, but requires that you have a network connection to view them. That in itself ended up revealing what I would consider a rather significant flaw in Azure Talon’s cunning networked plan when, to my surprise while out and about on my iPhone deciding to snap a few pics, I got the little gem you see to the right of this paragraph. My WiFi is fail? My WiFi is Fail? Your 3G is fail! Yep, it’s got all of the network infrastructure in place, but went the extra mile to specifically forbid 3G/EDGE access for reasons that thoroughly escape me at the moment. In fact, the first time this happened, I got nothing on display instead of the fail notice and this cure little error when I tried to view a joke, so I didn’t realize what was going on the first time, thougth maybe the server was down and this was how it failed to deal with that event.
The fact is, as jokes apps go this is the most well laid out and functional that I’ve seen, and the social ranking feature is a nice touch, but unless you’re able to connect to a local WiFi network wherever you are the time, not being able to use it over 3G reduces its usefulness in social situations to pretty well zero. Add that functionality and then I could easily recommend this to anyone looking for a large collection of jokes to carry with them. Right now, I can only recommend this to people who live in or are visiting areas well blanketed by WiFi access. There’s also a lite version you can try.
