I know what you’re thinking. You’ve seen this before, right? Untangle Mania? The Plateau? No, not exactly. I really don’t think I have it in me to review yet another one of those. While this is derivative, it’s of a different style of game. You might say it’s sort of Untangle’s opposite.
Rather than being about untangling things, Lasers (formerly known as Nodes) is sort of about tangling them — though that’s really just an unimportant side effect of rearranging a series of tethered lasers in order to illuminate all of the nodes (diamonds, here) with the beams. You start off easy with two tethered lasers and one row of diamonds. Easy peasy. But then things start getting hairy. More diamonds, and more tethered lasers. Sometimes the lasers are tethered to each other in a circle. Sometimes there are some semi-free range lasers attached at only one end. No matter how they’re attached, you have to find the right positions to place all of the lasers so that the beams cross every diamond on the level. And believe me, it only takes a few levels before things start getting pretty hairy. I started getting stymied around level 7 — and there are 40 of these things.
It’s a different sort of game for which there isn’t much competition on the App Store right now, and for puzzles lovers this should come as a pleasant surprise and an enjoyable if brain-twisting diversion. There are a few settings that allow you to choose from one of several laser colours, and you can toggle sound effects (which are decent) if you want to listen to the iPod while you play. The visuals are nice if a little static, but I found no complaints here. Actually, there isn’t really much to complain about at all. It’s decently appointed but not ostentatious. There’s no real wow factor, but it’s not really going for one. What you get is a nice, challenging, rather different puzzler from the folks who, you might remember, snapped up Olmob and now publish Submarine. With 40 levels, you certainly get your dollar’s worth, and given that it gets challenging in fairly short order, those should last you a while. If you want to give it a test drive, feel free to download Lasers Lite.
