Whoa, Black Betty, bam-ba-lam, whoa, Black Betty, bam-ba-lam…
Sorry. I can’t see that company name without thinking of that song. (The Ram Jam version, specifically.) For all I know that was the inspiration behind the name. Robotco though has nothing to do with flint-lock muskets, liquor, or women. It is instead a simple sorting game where the object is to collect the red robots and put them in the red zone, and the blue robots in the blue zone, and never the twain should meet or they’ll explode.
Robots usher out of an exit at either the top or the bottom of the screen and start wandering around aimlessly. You simply need to drag them into their proper place. The further you progress, the more robots come out and the faster you need to sort them — red and blue robots don’t get along even outside of their cordoned zones, so left to mingle too long and they’ll eventually blow each other to bits. This is indicated when a robot starts to flash; at that point you’d better hurry up and corral the sucker or you’ll be cleaning up cogs and springs for the rest of the night. Perhaps the games main selling point here is that you’re able to use multitouch to sort them — grab multiples of the same colour with multiple fingers, or grab different colours, and drag them simultaneously into their proper places. Bonuses are awarded for such combos.
Visually, Bambalam (whoa, Black Betty…) have done a pretty slick job on the presentation. In-game the visuals are pretty cartoonish and Flash-like in their 2D representation, but the menus are very nicely done. It’s got clean lines and colourful graphics though, so points on that front. The music and sound effects are decent, with a slightly whimsical accompanying the main menu. The game’s performance is smooth and multitouch works very well, which is a nice addition to the genre. I can’t say that it’s a game that gets me particularly excited, nor is it the sort of thing I’m likely to play much, if I’m being honest, but that’s mainly because it’s not the sort of game I tend to enjoy for long periods anyway. For those that are looking for a decent sorting game you can pick up and play in a few spare moments though, Robotco ranks highly among its sorting game peers. Its $1.99 price tag though is likely to sharply divide the fans from the 99-centers in the current App Store climate.
