Ukrainian team Olmob, Inc. have returned with a rather significant update to their indie game Submarine. You may recall that I reviewed version 1.0 close to two months ago, and found it to be a rather enjoyable avoidance game. This update throws some new stuff in the mix.
Primarily, it adds a new “Neo” mode to the game where you get to actually shoot things — and things get to shoot back at you. You get two new weapons — well, technically one, but two ways of using it. Freshly armed with torpedoes, a new button on the left will fire them straight ahead do destroy anything in your path. The new button on the right fires torpedoes that aim in a downward motion to destroy sea-bed-based enemies.
And about those enemies: As there are two new weapons, so too are there two new enemies: New enemy subs will attack you in the water, firing torpedoes at you, and ground-based SAM (uh, SWM — Surface-to-Water missiles?) units will fire up at you. Note however that this mode is best played with the accelerometer for movement. Using touch controls in Neo mode makes it especially awkward to keep your sub afloat while manipulating the new on-screen buttons to fire at enemies.
If any of you old schoolers think this is vaguely kind of familiar, I’ll save you the trouble: Scramble. Not that there’s anything wrong with that; I pumped enough quarters into Scramble cabs back in the day, too, and there’s still the avoidance element present in the new Neo mode, so there’s a lot more to do. The idiosyncratic ability to crash into the level clear placard that floats by is still there, too, which still strikes me as the video game equivalent of having a boom mic fully enter the frame and smack one of the actors in the face in a TV show and watching him react like it’s just another part of life in New York City.
At any rate, Submarine is still quite a fun little game, and the new Neo mode adds a new dimension to an already well done little game. It’s currently on sale for $1.99 for the rest of the week at least, so if you’ve been waiting for a sale and/or hemming and hawing over whether to get it, now would be an excellent time to take the plunge — so to speak. It’ll go back up to $3 next week.
(Note: Yes, I know I changed the game’s category from casual to arcade. That’s because Neo mode now puts it squarely in arcade game territory. Stop being a pedant.)
