I’ll say one thing, Avalinx don’t take much time off. But why should they? They’ve already got the whole casino card game engine down cold, so all they need to do is swap out the game logic and rules, maybe add a few features here and there for fun, and they’ve got a whole new card game ready for prime time. Thus, hot on the heels of Let ‘em Ride Pro, they’ve just released 3 Card Pro poker to add to their Pro series of casino games.
3 Card Poker is pretty much just like real poker, only smaller, like poker’s little brother. The thing about 3 Card Poker though isn’t merely that there are fewer cards, but that having a poker game with fewer cards changes the rules a bit and shifts the odds around. Also, since there is no discard phase, you’re pretty much playing with what the dealer hands you.
At its core the rules are pretty much the same as normal poker: High card, pair, straight, flush, etc. The two hands that that missing here are the full house and two pair, for obvious reasons. Betting here can be done in one of two ways, either separately or jointly: There’s your standard ante, which is played on the right betting circle. This is how much you plan on betting for your hand. If you so choose, you can also place a bet on the “pair plus” diamond, which is a bet against the dealer that your hand will be better than the dealer’s without having seen any cards yet. Once the cards are dealt you can choose either to fold if you think you have a weak hand, or raise your bet if you think you can beat the dealer.
At the end of the round the hands are compared and chips paid out to whomever won the hand. As with all Pro series games from Avalinx, you’ve got all the accoutrements: Extensive help with tips and strategies, a dealer assistance, configurable card backs and tablecloths, and different tables with increasingly higher betting minimums and limits, plus the usual high quality graphical style (courtest of 357am.com — magnum in the morning?) and smooth gameplay the Pro series is known for.
For those that loves you some Vegas-style card action, Avalinx certainly have some of the best of breed in this category that are certainly worth checking out. They’ve got style and substance and do a very good job of bringing the Vegas experience to your iPhone and iPod Touch. At this rate, one might suspect that they’re aiming to bring every Vegas card game to your pocket.
