What would you get if you were to combine skiing or snowboarding with the age-old classic game of bowling? If you said “I have no idea what you’re talking about, so here’s a bunny with a pancake on its head,” I’ll give you points for trying amid the confusion of such an unlikely pairing. Fortunately, GameResort figured it out, and the result of this unholy union is Downhill Bowling, possibly the strangest yet most enjoyable bowling game I’ve played.
Downhill Bowling takes the game and brings it to the great outdoors, where the object is to control your bowling ball as it travels downhill and around obstacles to knock down 10 frames worth of pins and achieve the highest score. Control is simple: Tilt your device to direct your ball around the level. As you careen down each level, strings of coins will offer extra points — and bonuses if you can manage to grab all of the coins in a string. Further assistance is provided in the form of powerups, which can give you the ability to set off a bomb (good for making sure you knock down all the pins as you hit them), jump, grow, shrink, and other powers.
Each level also features a set of achievements you can strive for, from bowling a perfect game (knocking all the pins down) to getting a certain number of coins or hitting all of a level’s targets (sheep, snowmen, etc.) and so on. Periodically, you’ll also encounter speed arrows, jumps, and cannons, the latter of which you can aim and fire your ball at a target. But naturally, not everything is smooth sailing. Along the path you’ll need to avoid fences, mushrooms (which turn you all trippy, man), pebbles (which can bump you off course) and other things that can impede your progress or make the going difficult.
The graphics and sound in the game are pretty well top notch. The game utilizes the Unity engine (hence its size) which is an able performer, making the action fast and smooth. Overall, this strange coupling of concepts makes for an odd yet compelling game that you’ll keep wanting to try over and over to best your score and attain more achievements. This lite version features only one level, while the $2.99 full version features a 10-pack spanning numerous different and enjoyable themes. If this lite version isn’t enough to whet your appetite (and frankly, I think it is), you can play Downhill Bowling online for free. (Unity Player plugin required) The online experience is ever so slightly different, with keyboard control (obviously) and some slightly different visuals here and there, but otherwise is exactly the same game. Well worth checking out in any form.
