Another word game while we’re at it, this one in the spirit of Bookworm, but with a kind of Tetris twist about it.
The object of WordPops is, of course, to spell words. You start off with two rows of bubble-encapsulated letters with which to spell things, and new letters rise up from the bottom at regular intervals. Words are spelled by dragging your fingers over the letters in the order of the letters in the word you want to spell. You must keep the pile down as much as possible in order to avoid letting the letter-bubbles pile up (er, down) to the bottom. As with such word games, longer words are worth more, just as certain letters are worth more than others — though the value of each letter isn’t displayed.
To assist you in your quest for high scores and a larger vocabulary, certain coloured bubbles offer bonuses. Some bubbles offer 2x, 3x or 5x word score multipliers. Others offer different ways to bring the pile down: The mutate bubble will alter the surrounding letters; the fire bubble will destroy bubbles in its immediate area, and the ice bubble will freeze the board and stop new letters from appearing for a brief period of time.
The graphics in WordPops are very nice indeed, and the sounds are good, too. The game’s dictionary seems to be pretty extensive — I didn’t run into any words that it didn’t recognize. I don’t know whether the dictionary gets into 7 letter words or higher, since the letters I got in my tests didn’t let me spell anything longer than 6 letters.
It’s a nice fun game overall — fans of Bookworm and similar Boggle-based games should enjoy this one. This lite version is fully functional with the exception that it limits you to a score of about 10,000 points. (You can score higher, but it’ll end the game as soon as your last word brought you over the top — so make the last word count if you want to see how high you can get it.) If you want to keep on spellin’, the full version will cost you $1.99.
