Anyone who has played the classic card game Snap, whether the kiddie variety with the fun pictures or with a standard deck of cards should appreciate this. Collect3 have just released Animal Snap! for the iPhone/Touch, and to celebrate, they are giving away both Animal Snap! and the original Snap! absolutely free for a limited time.
Snap is a simple two-player card game in which both players are dealt an entire deck of cards. Players then take turns simultaneously flipping over their top card and placing it on a discard pile. If the two cards match (whether as an image in the children’s version, or have the same number with a standard deck of playing cards) the first player to yell “Snap!” and place their hand on the top of the discard pile forces the other player to take all of the discards. When one player runs out of cards, the other player must keep flipping until a match turns up, at which point “Snap!” is called, and if the player with no cards left wins the call, the game is over. Otherwise, the player must take the discards and continue until the victory condition is met.
Collect3’s version of Snap! is done in OpenGL-ES, so it has a nice smooth 3D flavour to it with some nice effects. It plays an alternate version of Snap, where the player with the most cards wins, so your object is to collect cards, not lose them. The flipping of the cards in this game is automated, so the only thing players need to do is watch for a match and touch their own end of the screen to call “Snap!” The player who does so first collects the discards. The game keeps track of the time differential between the two players tapping their own pile, mostly for kicks, and at the end of a round it will give statistics on the fastest and slowest “Snap!” calls for both players.
The graphics here are very polished and well done — Collect3 really took their time with this one. Every round takes place in a new setting — for standard Snap!, first is the beach, then the park, then the kitchen, and so on. It adds a nice feeling of variety to the game. The sounds are also very nicely done. Animal Snap! belies Collect3’s Aussie origins though, as they include a few of animals unique to or predominantly found in Australia, such as the Numbat and Quoll
Overall, very nicely done indeed. The little notions and effects show that Collect3 though of ways to spice up the game far beyond what it truly needed just for the sake of polish and spice. For those who enjoy Snap, this has got to be about as good as it gets, so it earns its 5 star rating.
Remember, it’s only free for a limited time so hie thee to the App Store and start downloading.
