There have been quite a few notes-style apps on the App Store over the last few months, but it seems to have taken Hoofien to write one worth completely ditching the built-in notes app for. Sure, others did more than the built-in Notes app, but none of them really did enough to make it worth the effort. Iconic Notes changed that — quickly.
Imagine, if you will, a notes app where you can change your font size, colour and background colour. Imagine one where you could assign icons to notes. One where you could create your own icons from photos in your library. One where you can create folders in which to organize your notes. One where you can generate a template file to base all new notes on, E-Mail notes to anywhere, write protect your notes, reorganize the location of any given note or folder, have unique attributes for each note, and more.
That’s Iconic Notes. It gives you a familiar iPhone-style UI, complete with jiggling icons when you delete or reorder them. Editing notes is the same experience as the normal Notes app, but there’s also a config screen where you can set the various parameters for each note. Colours, icons and font size can also be set here — and the colour picker and icon list are scrollable, which is kind of cool. There’s also a spot to change the font, but it doesn’t seem to work despite advertising the possibility in the description. I’m presuming this might be a bug and hopefully it will be fixed.
It isn’t completely perfect. One of the major things missing is landscape editing. To be the ultimate replacement for the Notes app, it really needs landscape editing. And of course, the font selection needs to be fixed, too. It would also be nice if it were possible to selection stationery — maybe even from the photo album, so one could create their own.
Still, even as is, it’s a most excellent note taking app well worth checking out. It’s only free for a limited time for the next week and change, so if you want it, you know where to find it.
