Since we’re on the topic of darts, let’s turn now to a different form of them. Remember lawn darts? (Some of you may remember them as Jarts.) Remember when they were banned in North America because one too many jarheads took one to the noggin or some damn thing? Good times, good times. (Okay, maybe not, since 3 children have been killed by them in rather tragic lawn dart accidents.) Still, if you’ve got a hankerin’ for some good old-fashioned lawn dart action, Concrete Software have brought it back to you in a perfectly legal virtual format.
Two variants of the game are included here: Standard lawn darts with the two scoring rings, and crown darts, in which the object is to get your darts as close to the yellow crown dart as possible to score.
Rather than flick shooting as with Darts below, Lawn Darts works more like the artillery games or golf games in that you take your aim, then set your power with a bouncing power meter. The game is done in OpenGL-ES for some nice 3D action, though the graphics are relatively primitive, all things considered. The characters all look like they were done with some sort of freely downloadable 3D rendering program that uses phong shading or somesuch. Not that this really detracts from the game or anything, I just wanted to add a little snark, because there have been too many good games released lately and I haven’t had a chance to moan about something.
Concrete aren’t content to give you just your plain old, straight-up lawn darts game, though, no sir. That would be fun, but it wouldn’t be enough fun. To that end, they’ve gone and added some additional dart types to mix things up. Besides your standard lawn darts, you have bomber darts, which destroy any darts near them, flaming darts, which burn and darts near them and any that may happen to land near them on subsequent turns, nuke darts which kill all darts (typically used as a cheap shot during the last turn of a round to keep anyone from scoring), splitter darts, which split into 3 mid-flight, magnet darts, which attract all nearby darts to it, and laser-guided darts, for that perfect shot every time. You only have a limited number of them to start with, but you gain additional darts (randomly selected) for every point you score at the end of a round.
Like artillery and golf games, you also have to contend with wind speed and direction, so you need to aim and set power accordingly to compensate. There are 4 scenes in which you can play: The back yard, the woods, the ocean(!), and the moon(!!). You can pick one of four characters to play as well: Ranger Rick, Sally Soccermom, Elco the Octopus, or Merv the Martian.
The graphics are fairly good here — not the greatest, but effective, and the frame rate is good. Sounds are pretty good, and there’s some light if janky background music to accompany gameplay. Overall, a fun and addictive game worthy of checking out.
Be warned however that this is only a promotional freebie for the week, so grab it while you can. Next week they start charging for it.
