Yeah, I know, you’re thrilled to see yet another SameGame variant. Don’t crack that yawn too wide just yet though, because this one tries to be a little different, and it ends up actually being rather good indeed.
I don’t think I need to explain what SameGame is all about since every platform has been flooded with versions of it since its inception — it’s rather like having to explain Tetris: If you don’t know, please report to orientation for new visitors to our lovely planet.
In addition to standard SameGamePlay, BPop offers “twinkling donuts” (IndieAn’s description, not mine) which can be changed to any colour by tapping on them, allowing you to join your choice of groups. You are also presented with two goals on each level: The first is a score goal, which you must exceed in order to advance to the next level. The second is an objective, which is usually to eliminate X number of Y-coloured blocks. This last does not have to be completed, but you get bonus points if it is. You also get added bonuses and the end of a round for the least number of remaining blocks that have no matches. (The description states that you need to remove all of the blocks to advance, but this isn’t true, or at least is poorly worded.)
The graphics and animations in BPop are top notch. It may not be quite as flashy or exciting as Hudson’s NeoSameGame — but what is, really? BPop nevertheless manages to stand proudly on its own two feet in that department and has nothing to be ashamed of. The sounds are good, but very loud, and unfortunately once again no specific volume control is used here so it defaults to ringer volume — that needs to get changed to use application volume.
Overall though this is a very addictive, very well done SameGame variant that definitely deserves its place amongst the top such games. This lite version limits you to 5 levels of play, so if you want an unlimited version it’ll only cost you a buck for the full version.
