Oh no. Not again again.
Well, look on the bright side. I get the crap out of the way first, then I get to write about better stuff.
So, y’all recall my review a couple of days ago for Aliens! from MyHIP, which I failed to fail because I felt sorry for it, right? And now they’ve gone and released a second freebie. A slot machine this time, so there’s no hiding behind words like “retro” in the hope of fooling people into thinking it was designed badly on purpose.
Guess what? It doesn’t suck as badly Aliens! did — but like FuguBowl below, don’t think that makes it good. Let’s face it: It would be damn hard to screw up a slots game so badly that you’d rather play Aliens!.
It’s a basic slot machine. You start with 100 credits, pay 10 credits per spin, and win whatever combos listed on the payout chart come up on the reels.
The graphics clearly weren’t drawn by MyHIP. Like Aliens!, they were probably ripped from other sources, as evidenced by the ornate picture frame surrounding the reels, which looks like it was also antialiased for a white background. (What the hell is wrong with them? Do they not see the obvious white fringe? Or do they just lack any sense of taste or style?) Given this, it’s probably safe to assume that the payout chart was also lifted from a better slots game somewhere.
The animation of the reels is … well, it isn’t winning any beauty contests, but at least it’s animated, which is a step up for them. It’s not good, but it’s something. Once again, your credits are displayed in a plain old text box beside the spin button. There are no high scores, your score gets reset each time you load, and there is no state saving. It’s ugly with ripped graphics, and there’s no sound, just like their previous effort.
Yet it’s an improvement, if only by a degree or two. It’s functional, if not particularly fun. While I can’t bring myself to give it a better actual score than Aliens!, I can at least say that this one escaped the Hall of FAIL by a larger margin.
