Okay, now we’re starting to edge into the realm of pseudo-psychology where my index finger begins feeling the need to circle my temple while I make “Woo-woo!” noises. (Not the Bubb Rubb kind.) Nothing personal against BrainFreqz because I know this stuff has been around for flippin’ ever, but that doesn’t make me think it’s any less nutterrific.
BrainFreqz’ Affirmations series of apps combine isochronic tones with binaural beats in an attempt to lull you into a submissive, entranced state in which you are open to suggestion, and then follows it up with repetative affirmations designed to bolster your confidence and resolve to accomplish whatever it is that particular Affirmations app is designed to get you to do — in this case, lose weight. In other words, zen meditation meets high tech consciousness manipulation narrated by Stuart Smalley.
Okay, Stuart Smalley was a lie, but it embodies how I feel about this stuff. But then I’m not its target audience. I’m sure there is that contingent of people that are susceptible to it, so if it works for you, that’s awesome and I wish you all the success in the world. I can’t bring myself to give this sort of thing high marks though, as I think its efficacy beggars belief and thus strikes me as a waste of time and money. (This one’s free, but the other 10 in the series run $2 apiece.) I’m all for anything that can improve one’s health and life in general, but only if it doesn’t stretch credulity to the breaking point.
