Not to be confused with xCube by Senygma, this is Idle Hands by xCube. Now that we’ve straightened that out, how well can you type on the virtual keyboard? Have you gotten used to it or are you still hunting and pecking? Think you’re good? Want to find out just how good you are? Still need some practise? Do you want me to stop asking rhetorical questions?
Idle hands offers you the chance to test your virtual keyboard sklls by giving you typing exercises using small excerpts from books to type out. (Actually, they all seem to be brief passages from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which is just fine with me becuase Douglas Adams was awesome, may he rest in peace forever on Earth Mk. II.) When you have correctly typed out the snippet you will be scored based on both your speed and accuracy, and your local high scores are retained.
If you think you’re good enough to pit yourself against the world of virtual keyboardists then you can try your hand at the World Challenge. Here, you will be given two excerpts to type, one after the other, and you will be scored on your overall performance and given a global ranking when you’re done. You can enter as many times as you like of course. Contests are held on a monthly basis, so if you don’t snag the top spot this month, there’s always the next.
It’s a pretty decent app and is a good way to get people to improve their virtual keyboarding skills — especially those for whom the keyboard is their biggest complaint. Remember: You only hate it because you suck at it.
I like it. It’s clean and simple, the colour scheme is very earthy, and nothing inspires self improvement like the opportunity to do it at the expense of someone else’s pride.
