As I mentioned in my previous review I’d get to this little self-hypnosis app. Now, let me say right off the bat that while I’m a little dubious about the whole process in general, I do think hypnosis is possible, but it really depends on how susceptible the individual is to it. There are those who simply can’t be hypnotized, and though I’ve never had it tried on me, I’m quite sure that I’m one of those people. In order for hypnosis to work the individual must on some level believe that it will, or at least be open to the idea that it might. I am in the former category: I simply do not believe that it will work on me at all. Thus, going into this review I’m a little biased against its efficacy, so I’m just going to describe what it does rather than whether it works or not.
The app is actually quite simple. You can set your session length and choose a “power of suggestion” to be inserted at some point. (In this lite version, only one power of suggestion, “restful sleep,” is included.) When you start the session, a man with a smooth baritone begins to instruct you in how you should begin your relaxation session in an effort to become more open to hypnosis (and optionally the power of suggestion that will come later.) He’ll lull you into a state of relaxation by giving you things to visualize while a dreamy, looped synth pad repeats in the background.
Ultimately he’ll drag you into what is designed to be a state of hypnosis wherein he’ll tell you all about how to get restful sleep (or improve your mood, or whatever the other programs are designed to do).
I didn’t really have the time or patience to follow the entire program from beginning to end — I’m not exactly doing this in a vacuum at the moment, so its efficacy would be limited even if I was of a mind to believe it could work. Nevertheless, it seems like a decent enough app and does more or less what I imagne a hypnotist would do in a live session. Whether it works will be entirely up to the individual, but I can see that the potential is there anyway.
