Another Connect 4 game hits the App Store (I’m sure you’re all familiar with this Milton Bradley classic), but FlipSide5 have gone to the trouble to try and make it as authentic as possible. The graphics are all wonderfully rendered in buttery plastic, and the familiar plastic “clink” of the chips dropping should bring back some memories. There’s even a slider at the bottom to empty the pieces when you start a game over — but if you’re feeling giddy, you can turn the device over and watch the chips fall out the top, too.
But FS5 have gone and added multiplayer capabilities over local WiFi or remote WiFi/3G/EDGE, so you can challenge real humans, see what country they’re playing in, and even send messages back and forth. Furthermore you can undo a move, get hints, and see the last move made in case you missed it. It will auto-save too, in case you have to quit or answer a call.
There are quite a few settings, too. You can choose which colour starts, choose alternating starters, or pick at random, choose the board size (small, medium or large), set the computer’s skill level for single-player games, toggle sound, and even watch a gameplay demo.
Granted, as far as gameplay is concerned this is just a couple of steps up from Tic-Tac-Toe, but FS5’s mission seems to be that they want to take old school physical games and turn them into the best digital representations they can — much like touchGrove/Neon Surge are doing with vintage handheld LED games. They’re succeeding quite well so far, so my hats off to FlipSide5 for some quality work. 5 stars and anything from the bottom prize rack.
This version is ad-supported, but if you’d rather stick it to the man, there’s a $1.99 full version available.
