App Name: QuickGraph
Developer: Colombiamug
Category: Utilities
“Yet another graphic[sic] calculator,” says Columbiamug. Now, I’m the first to poke derivative apps in the ribs if they are at a loss to justify their own existence, especially if there are already a glut of them, but by my count there are only currently 4 graphing calculators in the App Store (including this one), of which 3 of them are free (including this one), and only one of those supports both 2D and 3D function plotting: This one. Thus, QuickGraph justifies its own existence amongst the subgenre with aplomb.
On that note, QuickGraph supports cartesian, polar, spherical and cylindrical coordinates, and up to 3 equations can be visualized simultaneously in either 2D or 3D modes. 3D mode supports pinch zooming and drag rotation to view the graph from any angle at any zoom level, or you can shake to reset or clear entry fields. While in 3D view mode, you can double-tap to change the view mode from points, lines, or shaded solid. Rotation and zooming is smooth and quick, and the whole thing could even be called pretty. (Seriously, get a load of that screenshot). Try that on your TI-89.
Furthermore, you can evaluate any equation at specific points along the graph, and store commonly used equations in its custom functions library. QuickGraph will also save your workspace between sessions, and you can toggle both key sounds and shakes in the settings.
For those of you that need a good graphing calculator — and in particular, for those that need a nicely visual 3D plotter — QuickGraph does the trick quite nicely.
(This app is filed under Education in the App Store. I guess that technically fits for you college/uni students who have need of graphing calculators, but I think it fits more broadly in the Utilities category, so that’s where I’m filing it here. My site, my filing system.)
