For those of you who like word scrambles, you’re going to love Anagrams. And by “love” I mean “tolerate.” Anagrams is about as simple a word game as they come, featuring graphics that are just about as simple, except for the backgrounds, which are artsy in a way, but look like they’ve been digitally enlarged from images a quarter the size due to the soft jagged edges.
Worse however is that there is a maddening delay when you tap on letters before they appear in the word field below, and taps were often not even registered, forcing me to tap three or four times before it understood that yes, I’m tapping on a letter because I’d like to include it in my guess, thank you very much. There’s no way to quit other than to mash the home button, either, and there’s a rapidly rotating banner at the top vaguely advertising their other iPhone/Touch native and web apps.
There’s also a timer that counts down from 60. Not seconds, though — each tick seems to last about two seconds, which makes me wonder why they just didn’t count down from 120 seconds. I guess that was too many numbers to take in all at once. A clue in the lower-left corner points you in the general direction of the word you’re trying to unscramble.
The most enjoyment I got out of this game was reading in the description that this was rated age-appropriate for players 9 and up for “Infrequent/Mild Cartoon or Fantasy Violence.” I did envision physically ripping this game out of my iPhone and hitting it repeatedly with a pipe wrench, so maybe there’s something to that after all.
